The Sustainability Subcommittee works to foster a culture of environmental awareness and sustainable practice across the Somerly Primary School community.

In partnership with school staff, the subcommittee supports initiatives that integrate sustainability into everyday school life — combining education, hands-on learning, and community involvement.

A key focus of the subcommittee is the development and ongoing care of the school garden, which serves as both an educational space and a practical example of environmental stewardship in action.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Supporting the upkeep and development of the school garden
  • Working alongside staff to ensure the garden remains an engaging learning environment
  • Recruiting and coordinating parent volunteers for garden maintenance
  • Organising community “Busy Bee” days for major garden projects
  • Supporting composting, planting, and garden infrastructure improvements
  • Collaborating with the school to embed sustainability initiatives into operations and learning

Beyond the garden, the subcommittee also explores ways to improve the sustainability of P&C activities, including:

  • Reducing waste at events and fundraisers
  • Encouraging environmentally responsible purchasing
  • Supporting digital-first communications to reduce paper use
  • Investigating eco-friendly practices across P&C operations

Through collaboration with staff, students, and families, the Sustainability Subcommittee helps nurture environmental responsibility while creating hands-on opportunities for the school community to contribute.
